i really enjoyed reading a blog ‘Scary Mommy’ recently where the blogger writes about 15 phases her boys (aged 5+) are going or went through. and that got me thinking about B’s various phases since birth. tiresome, funny, cute, hilarious are just a few words i use to describe those times.

1. Sleep Deprivation. This phase is mostly for the moms when you don’t remember the last time you had a good 5 hours sleep at a stretch. Luckily this phase just lasted for 4-5 months for me when miraculously B decided to sleep full nights, giving me my 7 hours of night sleep again! and just when i thought things are getting easier…

2. On the move. when B wanted to put every choking hazard in his mouth. the highlight of this phase was he gulping down half a magazine and then puking it all out on the floor! my ability to complete any household task was seriously compromised, if not completely destroyed. B would initially crawl on his tummy so i would determine how dirty my house was based on the dirt stuck or collected by his tshirts (i called him a ‘mop’ and would be glad when he would swim on the kitchen floor on his tummy!). and later by the shade of gray (or black) on his knees and on the tops of his feet and palms.

3. Walking. i still remember when he took his first steps independently. there was just no sitting-down for him after that. and that evening we went to the mall and made his ‘nana’ chase him all around the mall while ‘nani’ and i shopped!

4. Carrots. He only wanted to eat carrots. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. He had to get the taste of carrots in every dish he ate. he would finish 2 carrots in a day when he was just 7 months.

5. Anything and everything sweet. if his meals were not sweet, he would not eat. i would take turns to add peas, corn, carrots, kumara in his meals. thankgod this phase did not last long. i hated mashing peas and corn!

6. Only plain roti. this phase still frequently visits B. he will only eat plain roti, without any gravy. unless its mango puree. then its another story all together.

7. The Simpsons. his recent on-going phase and craze. its cute. finally something gets him to sit straight on the sofa on a stretch of 30 minutes.

8. Mickey mouse. this was his phase before the simpsons.

9. Drinking only from a glass. when he was introduced to the glass concept, he wanted to drink water 24/7, only from a glass. he would take a few sips and then tilt the glass 180 deg down. we had wet patches on the carpet for weeks. this phase took a long time to go! sigh…

10. Cheerios. this was his love, and still is. but there was a phase when he only ate cheerios. cheerios was the first item on our shopping list.

11. Burhan eat. it all started when he did not eat for a few days and got me all worried and worked up. that’s when i realised he wanted to eat by himself. he would say ‘Burhan eat’ and would take the spoon from me and feed himself. although this phase tested my patience and was completely messy from M to Y, i am happy this phase happened.

12. read book. B LOVES books so i am not surprised when there were days he would get obsessed with ‘mummy read this book’!! while eating, washing dishes, before sleeping, while cooking etc.

13. You build and i break the blocks. every kid goes through this Lego Blocks phase. B would make M build a ‘big bus’ and he would break it off in secs and the cycle would continue. and once the phase dies off, the blocks are thrown in every corner, waiting to be stamped upon by us! Ouch… this phase comes every 2 months. now he builds and breaks it himself and throws it everywhere!

14. Cars. started after his first bday. there were days when he only played with cars, wanted every car he saw in any shop and would embarrass you in public if he did not get it. yea happened in dubai – he stared angrily at the cashier for taking 5 long secs to scan the car and give it back to him!

15. Drink from all the bottles at home. again this a recurring phase. pour water in different bottles and drink, whether thirsty or not! crazy fascination with bottles!

16. Throw out the boxes/containers. for days and weeks at a stretch this was B’s hobby. Opening the kitchen drawer and throwing out all the containers and lids all over the kitchen floor. So many of my lids got crushed beneath our feet! and once the drawer would be totally empty, he would climb in it. Mission accomplished!

17. Wear all shoes. he was obsessed/over protective of his shoes. he would carry and wear them around the house, put them in the cupboard, on the pantry shelves. i remember he would wear M’s shoes around the house and then remove and put them safely, whereas throw my shoes down!

or the Terrible Two, as its commonly known as.

AND i finally got to throw a themed party for him. his first bday bash was a grand one too but i never got to do anything personal in it, you know what i mean. so this time, i organised everything and made everything by myself, with the personal touch!

Untitled-2theme – cars ofcourse, since he’s crazy for it. had an amazing time preparing for it. shopping for gifts, props, decorations, party-ware. got some outdoor games/toys from the toy library. the best part was i finally got to design his bday card, which unfortunately i couldn’t for his 1st bday.

Untitled-3Untitled-4honestly it got really hectic, especially with the decorations getting over just minutes before the party. but iv’e learnt a few things which i can work on for his 3rd party. AND in the end, it was soo worth it! 🙂

Sept – Oct ’14

B had his one-week-no-eating phase. that’s when i realized he wanted to eat by himself and not be fed! GOD!! why can’t toddlers just say/show what they want in a more adult-friendly manner?!! anyways all good now. he only eats by himself, whether its a dish with spoon or roti and gravy. messy but we are happy. the not-so-good part (every toddler action just HAS this part by default..sigh) is we cant force feed him anymore. its like if i don’t eat it by my hands, i don’t eat it at all! simple! 🙂 his taste buds have changed again. kiwi and pears are a no. he wont even look at the cheese slices or triangles. hes started a liking for simple cheese sandwiches. mac-n-cheese in not his fav anymore.

trying to form sentences now. water fall down (from) sky, papa kick ball, tissue fell down (in) water…he loves doing fill-in-the-blanks with his nursery rhymes and story books. he knows the noun/verbs in each sentence of all his books! wow i’ve read them so many times?!! time for new books..

started his toilet training. the first time i made him sit on his seat, he cried like crazy and jumped down. second time he sat with his teddy, third time with my phone, fourth time with ipad. now he loves it up there! he pulls the tissue roll out of the holder and throws the tissue in the bowl, chanting tissue fell down water! sings away his ABCs and nursery rhymes.

B’s stubbornness keeps increasing, which in turn starts a rage in me. Refusing to have his milk in morning, refusing to get ready for playgroup (yet impatiently waiting to get out of the house) tests my patience early in the morning! distracting him with his story books, singing to him so i can push something down his throat. and yet when he just pushes it away, it drives me MAD! screaming at him just works for that moment, and in sometime i feel guilty. punishing him by not talking to him, not taking him to playgroup that day does not make much difference ’cause of the toys at home. sigh… i wish i could throw a tantrum and throw his toys around to vent my anger (nope haven’t done it). its surprising how these not-so-small toddlers can stir up so much of anger in us, which i never even knew was piled up in me.

Aug – Sept ’14

this was a month of 2s, 3s and more. B now joins 2-3 words together like hi papa, big teddy, hot water, teddy eyes, how do you do, pink teddy, dirty water… interaction is so much more fun, with him being more descriptive and vocal about his wants and wishes.

keeps humming his nursery rhymes all day long. ABC being his fav, followed by wheels on the bus, hush little baby, twinkle twinkle. his love for books is increasing (yaay!). hes now started to sit for a longer time during storytime in playgroup. at home too, he prefers sitting with his books than playing with his toys now. post dinner is always storytime. reeeadd he says. 🙂

B was down with a cold and cough almost throughout the month. He passed it on to me, which he later took it back. Waiting eagerly for the summers.

21 monthshis stubbornness is becoming quite obvious now. if he does not want to eat, nothing will change his mind. and that’s becoming a concern, since hes being a bit of a picky eater, compared to his earlier days. Thank god he still loves his fruits.

celebrated his first Father’s Day at his Mainly Music. got all dressed up like M (actually even better than M!). did a bit of celebration at home as well. He did an art work for M at playgroup, got a few gifts and baked lime pie and shepherd’s pie! we went to the mall for M’s gifts and B is worse than his papa when it comes shopping. He just outright refused to get into any shop. everytime he would see us going into a store he would run away from me! even giving him 2 balloon to distract him didn’t do the trick (what was i even thinking!). atleast M agrees to enter a store with me. that’s when i learnt strollers are a MUST when going to the mall. atleast one boy is buckled down! 😉

July – Aug ’14

was a socially active month for B. playgroup in morning, Markaz in evening. he loved it! playing with other kids, screaming, running around, and ignoring his mummy papa were some of his 20th month’s highlights!

1st time i saw a possessive side of B. he got all charged up when he saw a 11-12 month old touching my bag. he immediately got up and pulled the kid’s hand away, carried my heavy bag and kept it in my lap (all the while screaming mamma!) and sat in front of it, guarding it! 🙂 Sounds cute and brings a smile now but at that moment it was impossible to make B understand that the kid is not trying to steal my bag!

IMG_5978 copyhe’s also very possessive about his stuff. well maybe possessive is not the right word, but lately its not easy letting him to share his toys or food with other kids. sometimes when told twice or thrice, he will share but other times its just an outright no and tantrum. hope this is just another toddler-phase because it gets difficult to stop him from playing with kids, whom he in return does not share his toys with. although there were a few who he gladly shared his toys and food with in Markaz. Hussain and Mufaddal being his buddies. Zahra being his best friend. B hugged and kissed her on Eid day! how kids sense its the last day they will be seeing each other in Markaz. Cute!

B was down with Croup last month. that’s random fever and cough lasting for 5-7 days. Viral and contagious. happy to know its the last month of winter!

mischief, volume, laughter and vocabulary, increasing by the day! you ask him who are you and he replies cheeky! his name is Babu, teddy’s name is Ted, mummy’s name is Nish but papa’s name is Muh-papa (he said my name before his papa’s..yess!)!

i personally think this is the best age. its the parrot phase where B keeps repeating everything he hears, he entertains us 24/7, communicating with him (and vice versa) is much easier now than a year back. he helps with the clean up of the mess he makes. yet the house looks like a battle ground most of the time. and at the end of the day when i fling him on the sofa (he loves being thrown around), its just going to release a roar of laughter! and then B asking for some more!
